In order to strengthen and develop cross-border cooperation, on 8 June 2022 the Port authorities of Trieste, Venice, Luka Koper, in cooperation with the Consortium for Economic Development of Friuli and the University of Primorska, concluded a protocol on sustainability and energy efficiency of ports. These are key in reducing the environmental impact of ports and improving the quality of life on both sides of the national border. With the adoption of the protocol, the partners committed themselves to continuing the activities that have been set in recent years within the EU project Clean Berth, co-financed by the Interreg V-A Slovenia – Italy 2014-2020. Through this project Luka Koper has installed a radar system for monitoring and detecting spillage of pollutants on sea and also purchased wall-box plug-ins for electric cars.
The key areas of action will be the exchange of good practices, joint training and awareness-raising initiatives and joint participation in co-financed projects to continue cross-border cooperation in the field of environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. In the coming years the special emphasis will be on finding new solutions in the field of alternative energy sources for use in port logistics. Global trends are already indicating the direction of development, especially hydrogen, ammonia and solar energy as the main alternatives to fossil fuels.
